What does X see in literacy? Why is it important?

  • understanding written word--as well as comprehension of books/texts
  • reading AND writing--
  • comprehension?--personal issue...education level
  • quality or state of being literate
  • what does this reading do for our definition of literacy?
  • point of view of literacy--particular kinds

Talking about Malcom X IS cultural literacy, but his ideal of literacy is to converse fluently.

* Main Entry:  	cultural literacy

Part of Speech: n Definition: knowledge of history, contributions, and perspectives of different cultural groups, including one's own group, necessary for understanding of reading, writing, and other media.

      • "From a global perspective, interest in basic literacy during the past four decades has been closely linked with national development. The history of many developing nations during this period often began by recognizing the fact that for the new nation to become economically viable, an educated work force is a prime requirement. Literacy is basic to education"--CROSS CULTURAL LITERACY, Global Perspectives on Reading and Writing
      • "Literacy is power, supporting the hypothesis that, for a traditionally oral culture, the acquisition of higher literacy skills is more a group social issue than an individual pedagogical one. The analysis also suggests that the teaching and acquisition of survival literacy skills in a 'functional literacy' ideal allows individuals to participate in society only to the extent that the society's power structures permit."--CROSS CULTURAL LITERACY
  • Cultural Literacy: "Cultural literacy is the ability to converse fluently in the idioms, allusions and informal content which creates and constitutes a dominant culture. From being familiar with street signs to knowing historical reference to understanding the most recent slang, literacy demands interaction with the culture and reflection of it. A knowledge of a canonical set of literature is not valuable when engaging with others in a society if the knowledge stops at the end of the text — as life is interwoven with art, expression, history and experience, cultural literacy requires the broad range of trivia and the use of that trivia in the creation of a communal language and a collective knowledge. Cultural literacy stresses the knowledge of those pieces of information which content creators will assume the audience already possesses."

  • Cultural Competence: "refers to an ability interact effectively with people of different cultures. Cultural competence is comprised of four components: (a) Awareness of one's own cultural world view, (b) Attitude towards cultural differences, (c) Knowledge of different cultural practices and worldviews, and (d) cross-cultural Skills. Developing cultural competence results in an ability to understand, communicate with, and effectively interact with people across cultures."

claim- education system set up poorly- the education isn't set up in the best way possible.

Grounds- (percentages)- large classroom, chalkboard(?), not individualized, too systematic,

warrant- (how did we link it?)- students learning cant be happening.

backing- network, but over all, what is missing?

qualifier- (might not be connected to me...)- direct effect between the two. but we are talking about a particular system

Rebuttal- why do we have all these graduate and scholars, but why is there such a high unemployment rate, ; jobs that don't exist today, but filling this out > scan-tron wont get me there

---

claim-technology has positive and negative effects

grounds- facebook, laptops=no work (technology as a distraction)grounds mean hard data like percentages.. (%)

warrant- reference to back up data, statistics?, effects credibility for students, sooo.. students being the experts? allowing credibility., students should at least know their own habits... which is ethos. person with degree collecting data.

backing- support, backing in the video... : well... lets see, difference in backing from everything else, how are they help in the argument... (quotes from others)

qualifier- data gathered from his 200 and some students, most students are affected by the data... but it doesn't affect all... so, MOST of the data, could be relevant to most students

Rebuttal- after the argument, their may be contradictions, so. whether the document is positive or negative, there is counter- argument on both sides of the argument.

\/\/\/second topic\/\/\/

this model is more abstract......

Act- having class in session (?) camera, movement (maybe the education system is actually the act)

Scene- present day class room

Agent(s)- 200 students,/ Wesch (teacher), the act of the camera may be the agent... idk

Agency- (learning?)/ education system,/ teaching ---- video, technology, shaky cam..

Purpose- (why)- associated with meaning- defects, problems, warning?? technology... so...
