Malcolm X:(homework) Being able to talk in a way that might seem you have higher education doesn't always mean that you can write in a way of detail. researching things you don't know can better help your education and way of life. Read things over and over helps better in memorizing and knowing the true meaning of something.

understanding written word--as well as comprehension of books/text (reading and writing)
(comprehension?-- personal issue..education level, quality or state or being literate) Being able to communicate with others around him in different types of forms.
What does this reading do for "our" definition of literacy? point of view of literacy--particular kinds.
How can we get to cultural literacy? Does X's work do that?
Day 4 (June 12)
Cultural Literacy: Culturally literacy is the ability to understand and appreciate the similarities and differences in the customs, values, and beliefs of one’s own culture the cultures of others. -understand that culture impacts their behavior and beliefs, and the behavior and beliefs of others, including one's own group, necessary for understanding of reading, writing and other media. -are aware of specific cultural beliefs, values, and sensibilities that might affect the way that they and others think or behave.
“No culture can live, if it attempts to be exclusive.” -Mahatma Gandhi
Cultural competence: is obtaining cultural information and then applying that knowledge. This cultural awareness allows you to see the entire picture and improves the quality of care and health outcomes. (a) "Awareness of one's own cultural worldview, (b) Attitude towards cultural differences, (c) Knowledge of different cultural practices and worldviews, and (d) cross-cultural Skills. Developing cultural competence results in an ability to understand, communicate with, and effectively interact with people across cultures."- wikipedia.
-jamon I agree with the definition of cultural competence. It seems to me literacy and competence differ in how you apply them. literacy is communication where as competence is knowledge.
