Editing a page in a wiki is very easy to do.

At the top of every page is the edit tab. Clicking that tab gives you access to the page's content. You can then add text, add links, make links to other pages in the wiki, make links to pages outside the wiki, add images, etc.

Contents

To make a link or create a page:

  • Click the "edit" tab. Write the word or phrase that corresponds to the title of the page you wish to link to. For example, if you wish to link to a pre-existing page called, "dog," simply write, "dog."
  • If you want to create a new page, you need to choose a word or phrase that does not already correspond to the title of a pre-existing page. For example, if you try to create a new page entitled "Syllabus," you will find that this title is already taken. You may get around the problem by naming your page "Syllabus-MY NAME," or any other variation.

Next:

  • Highlight the linking word or phrase.
  • Click the internal link button on the toolbar (the underlined AB).

OR

  • Enclose your linking word or phrase in double brackets.

Then:

  • Click "Save Page."

Congratulations, you have created a link (and possibly a page). If you click on the link, you will be taken to the page with that title. This page may then be edited, and new links added.

The Key to Using the Wiki:

Just use the toolbar that appears when you enter into edit mode. If you're not sure what something in the toolbar does, place your cursor over the icon in the toolbar. A box will appear which describes the icon's function.

The wiki toolbar functions somewhat like a word processor toolbar. Highlight the word or text you want affected. Click on the icon (internal link, bold, italics) that will make the change.

Some Things You Cannot Do:

  • Indent with a spacebar. If you indent text with a spacebar, the wiki will put a dotted blue line around the text
  • Use HTML code as you would on a website. Some HTML code will work. Some will not.
  • Embed QuickTime videos. For embedding videos hosted by some online services, see Instructions for embedding video in this wiki.
  • Embed audio (though we are working on this).

You can always, however, make links to audio and video located on the Web, outside the wiki.
