Is the Large Hadron Collider going to end the world?

September 12th, 2008 by rives

After reading an article about all the possible ways something bad could happen when the LHC is used, I have decided it doesnt matter. In the article everything that could go wrong centered around instant vaporization of the earth. Whether via creation of a black hole or by some other complex process which I really dont understand. In the end though, all options pretty much pointed to an instant death. This really doesnt bother me. If we have the choice of either learning a great deal of imformation about how the universe works, or the incredibly slim chance of vaporizing earth, I’d rather learn something. The LHC is one of the greatest achievments in modern science and to not use it because people like to be pessimistic would be sad.

The Firebird, a russion folk tale

What are the major themes of The Firebird?

This folk tale had several morals that it presented repeadtly. The first and most prominent theme was always listen to nature. In the tale, a hunstman disobeys his horse and ends up in a lot of trouble because of it. Also, throughout the story the horse provides advice which the huntsman follows and he eventually gets out of his troubling situation. The tale is trying to warn you not to go against nature or or anything large and complex that you may not understand. Questioning how the world works will only lead to trouble. Furthermore, the idea of having faith in authority is apparent. In the story the huntsman takes commands fromhis king without a second thought. Even though many of the kings tasksvery difficul, if not impossible to complete. The hunstman never shows any sign of unfaithfulness. The tale seems to tell you not to think for yourself and just listen to older more knowledgable people.
