There’s 306 calories in a twin twix bar

While watching a Twix commercial today, I realized I needed to write this blog. So therefore I am going to talk about commercials. The reasons commercials exists are to get people to buy, or invest in a company. A very funny commercial yet not very affective is the one with the baby. It is for a stock company and although the commercial is funny I was not aware that the commercial was even for a stock company. That’s the problem with many companies; they use elaborate commercials that wind up not being affective because viewers pay more attention to the commercials theme than when they tell what company it is for. Another commercial that is funny and affective is the Free Credit Report commercials. They include a catchy yet funny song that not only spells out the website but gets it tuned into peoples’ heads so they wind up singing the song. Thanks to the twix commercial otherwise I would have forgotten about this blog, now that’s an affective commercial!

Naive

October 10th, 2008 by alcxw9

“You’re such an ugly thing for someone so beautiful.” The lyrics Naive by The Kooks, presents an oxymoron. Written by Paul Garred, he uses this oxymoron as an effective tool to express to listeners his love for a girl who treated him so horribly. Often oxymorons are used in writing to convey a contradiction. For example Shakespeare’s Sweet Sorrow, exact estimate, pretty ugly, soft rock and political science. Paul Garred uses this oxymoron to emphasize vivid images and add variation to the language he used. Garred achieved his objective of betraying the girl as a bitch but yet someone who he loved.

I say gay but you say…

September 12th, 2008 by alcxw9

In my newest theory class we talked about the meaning of words. I say gay, but the girl next to me says dyke. I say black, my teacher says African American. The question remains the same, What words do we use to describe groups of people different from our own? There is an unlikely hood that as a society we would accept these differences and all come together under one name. So, for now we need to discover the appropriate names that can be used. The word Dyke use to carry a heavy stigma with it, until the Gay community “took” it back. As well as the word nigger until the black community accepted it as good rather than bad. I as a white, heterosexual however can not use these words regardless of their new found freedom within those communities. Now I ask, by these communities allowing those words to be said even with in their own, does it not allow the rest of the world to begin to use the names as well? So I’ll leave you with this thought:

“‘Nigger’ is a derogatory term used to insult our ancestors. See, if a white man used it, you’d be ready to fight. Your using it teaches him to use it. You’re saying it’s cool. Well, it’s not cool.” (Coach Carter)

Don’t waste your life

September 4th, 2008 by alcxw9

Am I living my life for Christ or for my own desires?  If I’m living my life for myself, am I wasting it? In the book “Don’t Waste Your Life,” by John Piper, he brings up the question, “…What would it mean to well- not to waste life… What was the opposite of not wasting my life?” He questions rather it is success or accomplishment, how to find the deep meaning so that you can live for Christ. As I sat in Jesse on Tuesday night, I wondered about the things I was doing in my life that were not “up to-par”. I instantly thought of several things. For a lot of the people in the room with me, they would take my partying ways as un-god like but that wasn’t what I was concentrating on. I would consider other things in my life wasteful before being young and having fun. After much consideration I narrowed it down to that elephant that takes up the room, the one most wasteful event in my life. *****! And I put a lot of thought into that? It’s so very simple!
